Repeal the Monsanto Protection Act and support GMO labeling

GMO Facts & News

Have you heard about the “Monsanto Protection Act” Yet?   Talk about political nonsense, listen to this!

Please try not to get too upset by this news.  You already know most politicians are self-serving fascists, so don’t be too judgmental about this guy, alright?

Senator Roy Blunt, who sponsored the bill and represents Missouri (where Monsanto is headquartered) is a strong ally of Monsanto. Here is his summary of the Monsanto Protection Act:

[box type=”warning”] What it says is if you plant a crop that is legal to plant when you plant it, you get to harvest it, but it is only a one year protection in that bill. – Senator Roy Blunt (R-Mo.)[/box]

Prior to the passage of the bill, a farmer could be ordered not to harvest a GMO crop if its safety was being questioned in court. Senator Blunt is married to Abigail Perlman Blunt, who is currently a lobbyist for Kraft Foods (who spent almost $2 million to fight labeling of GMOs) and formerly a lobbyist for Philip Morris.
GMO facts

Here’s The Facts About GMOs:

  • President Obama said he would “label genetically modified food because Americans have the right to know what is in their food.”  That was more than 4 years ago! However, President Obama did pass a law legalizing human consumption of horse meat, after being banned for decades, and he made sure the horse slaughterhouses were reopened – all within his first term.
  • The Hawaii Senate recently heard the House proposal to require labels on genetically modified food produced outside the state, and then they voted to table the bill for the current legislative session, effectively killing the bill.
  • The House Bill (HB) 174 was considered dead after the Senate Agriculture Committee opted not to hear the proposal even though it passed the Hawaiian House by a 50 to 1 margin.
  • Hawaiian Island agricultural interests, including some Monsanto Co. employees, testified to the safety of GM foods and argued labeling requirements would impose unnecessary costs on the food and agricultural industries.
  • Since California’s Proposition 37, which would have mandated labeling of GM foods in that state, went down in defeat last November, numerous organic industry leaders have been trying to find a state that will adopt similar labeling requirements through the legislative process. NONE HAVE COME TO THEIR SENSES!

Why is every other country labeling GMO facts?

Here are the top 7 GMO facts:

  1. GMOs are now present in 75 to 80 percent of conventional processed food in the U.S., according to the Grocery Manufacturers Association.
  2. 58 percent of Americans are unfamiliar with the issue of GMOs in food, according to a 2006 Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology study.
  3. “Non-GMO” is the fastest-growing health and wellness claim on store-brand food labels, up 67 percent in 2009, according to Nielsen Co.
  4. 80 percent of Whole Foods Market shoppers surveyed said they would seek out non-GMO products with clear labeling, and would be willing to pay more for these products. Yet the grocery giant has been unwilling to adopt labeling changes.
  5. The FDA does not require food with GMOs to be labeled as such, so avoiding them is hard to do.
  6. GMOs are banned or significantly restricted in 30 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan and all of the nations in the European Union.
  7. Unfortunately, due to cross-contamination and pollen drift, very few products in the U.S. are completely free of GMOs. The Non-GMO Project standard is a process-based standard that avoids the intentional use of GMO ingredients by providing suppliers with procedures and best practices for minimizing the presence of GMO ingredients.

It seems as though Democracy has failed us and the corporately owned media, fearing revenue loss refuses to help promote what is in the best interrest of the American People! Share your opinion on Earth Day: Monday, April 22, 2013.

[box] GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.[/box]
